Hi everyone! I’m Justin, a Computer Systems Engineering student at Universidad Fidélitas in Costa Rica. As part of the WPCredits program, I had to choose a WordPress contribution team and plan a project for this term. In this post I share what I chose, why, and what I hope to get out of it.
1. The team I chose
I decided to join the Photo Directory team, which collects original photos under the CC0 license so that anyone can use them freely on their websites.
2. Why I chose this team
What caught my attention is that every photo can end up on real websites around the world. It’s a very concrete way to contribute, and it doesn’t require advanced code. I also liked that the contribution is easy to verify: each submission is reviewed and, if approved, it appears publicly under my WordPress.org profile.
It connects with my interest in web development and WordPress: websites rely heavily on good, free images, and I wanted to understand how that part of the ecosystem works behind the scenes.
3. My contribution project
My project is to contribute original photos of pets and animals to the WordPress Photo Directory. I plan to take the photos myself, edit them, and submit them following the Photo Directory guidelines. My goal is to submit 30 photos during the term and learn from the reviewers’ feedback on each one.
4. How it relates to my skills and interests
I’m an IT professional who enjoys software development and learning new technologies. Pets and animals are a subject I really enjoy, and this project is a good chance to practice capturing their personality through photography. My technical background also helps me understand how images are used on websites, including formats, sizes, and metadata.
5. What I hope to learn
I want to learn how the Photo Directory review process works and what makes a photo acceptable. I also want to improve my photography and editing skills, and get used to communicating with an international community through Slack and the team’s documentation.
6. What I hope to achieve
By the end of the program I hope to have several approved photos in the directory, a complete portfolio documenting the process, and enough confidence to keep contributing to WordPress after the course.
You can find my WordPress.org profile here: profiles.wordpress.org/tuttichinox. I’ll keep updating this journal as I go. Thanks for reading!
